Women's fiction is just a marketing category, designed to appeal more to women than to men. But there are stories in that category that any human being would like.

About This Quote

In the early 1980s, before Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres became household names, there existed a popular TV show that aired on the NBC Network called The Women. Based in New York City, the show focused on a group of women who worked at a newspaper in New York City. One of the main characters was a woman named Carol Connors. She was a reporter for the newspaper and she often covered issues involving crime. In 1980, when The Women debuted, television critics took great interest in the program.

They thought it was a great idea for a show that dealt with issues dealing with women in a positive light. At the time, many television producers were having a difficult time selling shows to the networks that featured female protagonists in lead roles. In 1982, The Women was cancelled before its third season had been completed. In the book Men in the Mirror: How Men and Women Think Differently , author Michael Kimmel described The Women as a show that many people found to be very funny and entertaining. In 1992, after Oprah Winfrey had become one of America's most famous women and had become one of television's most successful entrepreneurs, she started her own talk show called The Oprah Winfrey Show .

During her time on the show, she interviewed many celebrities including then-President Bill Clinton . In 1994 , Oprah Winfrey hosted her last episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show . Many people felt it was due to her declining ratings on her new talk show that caused her to end things there. In 1995 , after Oprah Winfrey had left the world of television and had returned to live life as an entrepreneur and philanthropist , she created another talk show called The View .

Today, The View is still one of the most popular daytime talk shows on television . In 2006 , former TV executive and producer Norman Lear visited with some friends at his home in Pacific Palisades . One of his guests asked him if he had any ideas for another TV show like The Women . He told them he did not believe there was anything like that today .

Lear said it seemed like television was moving more toward reality TV programs where people were more out for themselves than they were for others . Lear said he thought it would be interesting for him to make something like The Women again where people could sit down and watch an interesting story about people who were trying to be helpful but were failing at it while they were trying to make things better for others while they were failing
